Unless I am using overdyed threads, I always use the loop method to start.

If it is an even number of strands, I always start this way. I am pretty particular about my backs, especially in the beginning, and try to keep them neat. Towards the end, lol, I'm usually sloppier.

Unless it's stitching with overdyeds or single (or odd numbers of ) strands, always... Even on needlepoint if I can get away with it! Not so much to avoid messy backs (never manage to keep my backs...

I hold the loop on the back. I can't tell the difference from the front of the "first/looped" stitch and any other stitch.

Yes the loop is on the back for me. And I sometimes even do a loopstart with overdyeds if I want a more subtle effect.
